Processing uv maps

Excuse me if i don't use the correct terminology.

I have pngs which are uv maps of clothing. I don't actually need Photoshop to apply patterns, textures, etc. to these items and use the result. I have other software that gives me reasonable results.

However, my impression is that, in applying a pattern to a 2D uv map, the cloth will be stretched and compressed when applied to the 3D model. I assume therefore that I should be wrapping the uv map somehow before applying the detail and then unwrapping the result before exporting it to apply to the 3D model.

I don't have access to the 3D model per se but have an application that enables me to apply the 2D uv map to it in order to see the result.

So, can I load a uvw file in png format into Photoshop, wrap it to form a 3D model of the clothing, apply material to that 3D model, unwrap the material to create a uv map and save it in a png format? Or, is my initial impression incorrect.
