Lines changing when pasting from one document to another

I've stumbled onto an issue in InDesign CS5.5...

I'm copying a couple horizontal lines, with various stroke widths, from one document and pasting into another. For some reason they are pasting in as to white-filled lines, with no stroke. When I apply a stroke to the pasted lines, InDesign is also adding Bevel & Emboss and Drop Shadow effects to each line. What gives?
